  • Haein Shim: Why some women are boycotting men
    2025/01/26

Giving up men is becoming a trend! And it all started with the 4B movement. In Korean, 4B stands for four “no’s”: no dating men, no sex with men, no marrying men, and no childbirth. It’s a bold feminist movement created by Korean feminists to break away from the toxic patriarchal system and build a community that truly centers on women and their needs.

In this episode, we spoke with Haein Shim—a passionate women’s rights activist, documentary producer, and freelance journalist—to unpack what the 4B movement is all about and why it’s resonating so deeply with young women in and beyond Korea. Haein also shares her personal journey from being anti-feminist to fully embracing feminist ideals and talks about how the 4B movement connects with other feminist movements like Escape the Corset.

Throughout the conversation, we explore the real challenges feminists face in a society that often misunderstands and misrepresents their motives. We discuss the power dynamics at play and highlight why reclaiming women’s agency and autonomy is more important than ever. Haein opens up about her own experiences with societal pressure and why she believes prioritizing women’s lives and choices is essential for change. We also challenge the Western perspective on feminism, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive understanding that respects diverse experiences.

  • Film Club 01: The Substance by Coralie Fargeat
    2024/12/30

Our first Film Club episode is a deep discussion of Coralie Fargeat’s provocative and visually stunning film, The Substance. The film won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival, and is a shocking exploration of the impossible beauty standards that our society places upon women.

We discuss its gripping narrative, the symbolism throughout the film, and the way it explores themes like the objectification of women, fetishisation of youth, the internal struggles and self-criticism that we face as women, fear of ageing, depictions of female madness, and our society’s collective destruction of women through the pressure to fit impossible beauty standards. Tune in for a thoughtful conversation!
