  • STOP THE CHAFE: GET SALTY BRITCHES!!!
    2022/10/28
This episode Salty Hunter Podcast I have Amy from Salty Britches. Amy's company started out of and necessity for her kid to be able to swim in salt water and not get so irritated that it made him miserable. After realizing that she had come up with a solution to a big problem she started Salty Britches. She started it right out of her kitchen and has exploded ever since. Now Salty Britches is found across the country at ultra-marathon races, triathlons, several groups in the military, and in the backpacks of some serious backcountry hunters. I had a wonderful time talking with Amy about her product and how it got started, and when it comes to being surrounded by good people, she's the definition. This conversation is for anybody. Anybody that has any aspiration to do something hard, start a business, or just do right for the world and see where it gets you. I'm not paid or endorsed by Salty Britches, but I can promise you that it will be in my backpack on every adventure that I take from here on out. Thank you all for listening, I love every damn one of them. Here's to the hunt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • STAY SALTY WITH REDMOND REAL SALT
    2022/10/17
Today on Salty Hunter Podcast I sit down with Darryl Bosshardt from Redmond Real Salt. I was turned on to Redmond Real Salt about a year ago, and after using their products I will never go back to normal table salt. This episode takes a deep dive into the history, geology, archaeology, and nerdiness of how Redmond gets their salt onto your table. I had no idea what this episode would entail, but Darryl’s passion and knowledge of his local area and where the salt comes from is fascinating. Darryl explains how the salt gets from the earth and into the shaker bottles you see on your table. We talk about how his salt made its way into the ultramarathon world, and how that lead into his electrolyte supplement company. Darryl compares the ingredients of other “natural” salts and their processes to get it onto your table. This episode is one that I'm sure you will enjoy listening to. • TOUGH AS HELL: SAGEBRUSH DRY GEAR
    2022/10/10
On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast, I sit down with John from Sagebrush Dry Gear. Sagebrush started in Dillon, MT and made its way up to Kake, Alaska where the original owners said that they wanted to move somewhere that didn't have a stop light. John bought the business and has taken over all operations for the company. He is continuing to hand-sew and handcraft dry bags that will last you a lifetime. John goes into the history of the company, how the bags are made, and explains how radiofrequency welding works. These bags are tough as hell and if you manage to break one these guys will repair it for you. It's my personal philosophy to buy once, then cry once, so I will be getting one of their dry bags in the very near future. I enjoyed the hell out of this conversation and I'm sure you will too. • DOCTOR OF FISHES: STEPHEN KLOBUCAR
    2022/10/05
This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I have a sit-down with Stephen Klobucar. Stephen is a fisheries ecologist. He studies fish in the North Slope (way the hell up there) and similarly to me, fisheries are what brought him to Alaska. This guy knows how to adventure up here; everything from float sheep hunts to bird hunting with sled dogs above the Arctic Circle. Stephen’s love for the outdoors drives him back to AK, along with the lucky streak he’s hit drawing tags up here. Dude’s got a horseshoe up his ass. Nonetheless, he makes it a point to make an adventure happen. Everything from studying fish in the Arctic, hunting moose with his dad, floating out a sheep, to training his bird dogs Stephen makes the backcountry his playground. I’ll let him tell you his next adventure. Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. Here’s to the hunt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • XOSKIN: SEAMLESS
    2022/09/27
This episode Salty Hunter Podcast I have Kroy from XOSkin. XOSkin has revolutionized the workout fabric. From their socks to their compression shorts, they have literally changed the game. Their patented designs and fabrics, in my opinion, will be your favorite thing to workout in. It doesn't matter the activity. You could be ultrarunning, doing your metcon, mountain biking, backpacking, or hunting, XOSkin will work for you. I will be continuing to use these same products throughout the winter while I'm backcountry skiing, hunting, classic and cross-country skiing. I don't see a downside and I don't foresee having any issues doing any activity you could imagine. I used this gear for the long runs leading up to my 58 miler and used the same pair of socks and shorts for my long run. No blisters. No chafing. This stuff is magic. They go with me everywhere and I am using them at work as well. I cant recommend this company enough. I want to thank Kroy for coming on. I look forward to everything that XOSkin has to offer in the future. Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. Here's to the hunt. Learn more about your ad choices. • SALTY HUTNER SOLO #2: 58 MILER RECAP
    2022/09/14
This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I recap my 58 miler. This run signified more than just a run. It was more than just a long day in the mountains and on the trail. This was a statement. This was the affirmation that I am on the right track; and doing the hard right is better than the easy left. I won’t quit vs I don’t quit is a thought that popped into my head some time ago. It’s insight into the character of a person. If you give someone a task, or a goal to accomplish that seems reasonable, that person could easily tell you “I won’t quit”. That no quit attitude ends when the task or goal is completed. Their personal accountability, motivation, and incentive for accomplishment is gone. When you give someone that is driven a task, they look at you and say “I DON’T quit”. That speaks magnitudes more about their character. This tells you the fragility of their egos will not get in the way of what needs to be done. They are the one warrior Heraclitus quotes. This thought crept into my mind at mile 36.8. After I found out I was tacking on an extra 6 miles I was demoralized. Then I remembered: I DON’T QUIT. I changed my thought process from “I won’t quit on this run” to “I don’t quit. Ever.” I’m not going to blow smoke up your ass and tell you these words gave me superpowers and I ran the next 21 miles at break-neck speeds. It was still a grind. But I will tell you those words tempered my thoughts and planted a new seed. This seed has already sprung and begun to grow. Wait ‘til you see what I do next. Thank you all for listening. • MOUNTAIN MAN: CHARLIE ESS
    2022/08/29
On this episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I am honored to be speaking with Mr. Charlie Ess. Charlie has done a little bit of everything. Wanting to be a mountain man in the North country brought him to Alaska where he found himself wearing many hats. Commercial fisherman, hunting guide, trapper, writer, film-maker just to name a few. Not long ago he made his own bow under the mentorship of a local bowyer. He now spends his time shooting his bow and hunting the land right outside his home. This was a fascinating story to hear, It has a little bit of everything from boat building in Homer to commercial fishing in the Bering Sea to trapping in the Arctic during the winter. Charlie will be coming back on. He has probably forgotten more than I will ever know. I am honored to call him a friend. As always, thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. • SALTY HUNTER SOLO #1: THE UGLY SIDE OF HUNTING
    2022/08/15
This episode of the Salty Hunter Podcast I sit down with me, myself, and I recapping the spring bear season (yes, I know it’s August), but to be honest with you I wasn’t sure I wanted to publish this. Although I have been called many things in my life dishonest is not one of them. So here is the story. Unabridged, unchanged and you hear it straight from me. This story does not have a happy ending. It does not bring hunting into a good light. But it does let you know of the type of person I am and continue striving to be. Around the hunting industry you hear buzzwords like ethical, moral, lethal and the list goes on and on and on. In this story you will hear words like: greedy, regret, ego and “what the fuck am I doing?”. This is the true story about my spring hunting season. It was heartbreaking, frustrating, and making me question whether I want to hunt with a recurve ever again. Thank you all for listening. I love every damn one of you. Here’s to the hunt.
