Growing crops and raising animals on the same land was what our grandparents and great-grandparents did...out of necessity. After decades of specializing in either crops or livestock, we are learning that our grandparents and great-grandparents were on to something more than just necessity, putting crops and animals on the same ground does wonders for the health of our soils. Here we talk about some of the benefits of utilizing an ICL system.

Don't farm naked, folks. This episode is all about the benefits of cover crops. Leaving the soil naked during any part of the year is detrimental and utilizing a cover crop has so many benefits. In this episode I highlight 14 benefits of cover crops. The phrase 'don't farm naked' is the slogan of the group, Practical Farmers of Iowa. Take a look at the book, Managing Cover Crops Profitably published by Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE).

In this episode of the Resilient Farming Podcast, we focus on the importance of diversity in our farming system. In this episode we focused on diversity in cropping systems, but the principle can be extended to any agricultural enterprise and we will share examples of diversity in other operations later. We also highlighted a book in this episode called, 'Building Soils for Better Crops.' It is published by SARE. You can access the pdf version of that book for free at www.sare.org

You can also order a hard copy of the book from that website as well.
