  • Loving God with Your Heart and Mind
    2019/03/05
Download Podcast Over the years my husband and I have learned that if we want to keep our relationship alive we have to make each other a priority. We have to keep doing the things we know works. It is essential that we talk and listen…not just listen, but listen attentively. We have to forgive,  love and give generously. My husband has taught me the importance And the truth is the really important stuff have to stay a priority.  Most important relationship can grow stale. The truth is our relationship with God can grow stale too. It’s not that we exactly stop loving Him or anything like that, it’s just that life piles in on us. And, before we know it we are over committed and over whelmed. It is so easy to skip the things that are not tied to a due date or an emergency. Prayer. Bible Study. Worship. All fall in that category. Necessary. Essential even, but if we aren’t careful can lose their place on our schedule. I believe Mark 12:29-30 holds a very important key to keeping important things a priority. “Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. 30And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ Have you ever really looked at the words in that verse? And while I memorized the verse years ago, I missed the words…”all your mind.” Somehow I didn't realize that my spirit (heart and soul), mind (thoughts) and body (strength) were all involved  and worked together in the loving process.  A Sad truth... I loved God with all my heart…but because I let my emotions get in the way, there was some areas that I didn’t obey Him. I can wrap my disobedience in all kinds of pretty excuses, but it’s still sin. Lately, I’ve learned I need to love God with my mind too. Emotional maturity is shaped out of mental maturity 1 Corinthians 14:20 NIV Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.  How do children think? They think it’s fun to play in the street. They think the wall is a great place to draw and they think they should stick sharp things into the outlets. And what they believe will get them in big trouble. Their thinking is influenced by their lack of knowledge and their immaturity.  So what does a parent do? Parents train their children. They guide them. They give them facts and a value system that guides them in making right choices instead of simply reacting.  Train your mind like you would a child. 1 Timothy 4:7 But reject irreverent and silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness. As a believer, the thoughts and ideas that shape our beliefs and attitudes must be filtered through truth. I know a lady that loved her mother deeply, but nothing she did could change what that mother believed. She believed a lie and that lie kept her from having a relationship with her daughter. Pain from the mother’s childhood deceived her heart. The first sin came as a result of deception. Deception continues to be a dangerous trap. That is why it is so important to make Scripture a priority in your life.  I know all to well how easy that we can become so busy that it is difficult to find time to nourish our thinking with God's Word. With technology we have the opportunity to turn precious moments into spiritual nourishment, reminders and goads that get us back on track. If you are like me, podcasts are one of those ways to learn and grow while I drive or clean house.   New Podcast That’s why I'm starting a new podcast. I want to give you regular reminders, encouragement, stories and illustrations to build your faith and help you stay connected with God. I want to help you stoke your fire and I want to help you keep your relationship with God a priority. It's called Pat's View.  Click here to listen on iTunes. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss anything.   I'll be launching it in the next few days.  It will be a 21 day focus on "Thinking God's Way for a Change." I don’t know where you are in your walk with God, but I’m hungry for more of  Him. I want my life to bring glory to God. If I want change, I must change what I believe. I must base my life on truth, not public opinion. Let me explain with one of our adventures. We were making our way home from a conference in Kansas when we decided to stop in Jackson, MS to see their capitol building. Built in 1903 in the ornate Beaux Arts style. Like 30 other state capitol buildings it had a large magnificent dome that crowns the building regally. I love the mindset of the Architect Theodore Link, “The style adopted is a pure renaissance classic of dignity and elegance of proportion which will fittingly express the power, honor, and stability of the State.  more from flickr.com Twelve of the capitol buildings in the U.S. choose a totally distinct style and left off the dome entirely. That would break ...

  • Does what you think matter?
    2019/03/13
Download Podcast  I am so excited that you are joining me on this Think Bible Study. The way we think can fuel our dreams or sabotage our future. I was shocked, absolutely shocked when I began to see all the places God talks about our thoughts, attitudes and heart. I want to share what I see in Scripture with you, because what you think is a critical key to your success, peace and joy. This first lesson is very basic, but stay with me. I want to be sure everyone is on the same page. Does what you think matter? Do you ever feel like your opinion doesn’t matter or that nobody cares what you think? Your thoughts matter-especially to you. Your thoughts shape your destiny. They can limit you, stop you or guide you. In this Bible Study we are going to look at more than positive thinking, we are going to look at biblical values that shape our thinking and beliefs Sometime even seeing something right before our eyes doesn’t change what we think. In 1875, Martin Vivian hired some men to cut down one of the giant Sequoia’s. It took two men 9 days to topple the giant. The stump of the giant measured 24 feet in diameter. You read that right…24 FEET! He wanted to transport it to the East, but how do you transport a 24 foot irregular slice of wood? He selected a slice higher up the trunk which measured 16 feet in diameter. Had it sliced into 8 pie shaped wedges and shipped it to the East on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mr. Vivian reassembled the pieces and exhibited the 16-foot slice of tree at Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia. People purchased tickets and stood in long lines to see “the hugest thing ever made by Mother Nature.” But people didn’t believe what they saw. Maybe it was because the pieces were fit together like a puzzle. But people just couldn’t believe there could possibly be a tree that big. They had seen big trees, but this slab of wood was too big. They called it the “California Hoax.” But the fact that the trees could grow that big was true. They missed the truth because what they believed was based on their personal experience. Whether the people at that Centennial Exposition believed the truth about the Sequoia wasn’t life changing, but what you believe will shape your life. When we base our beliefs on our personal experience and limited vision, it shapes our lives! “Sow a thought and you reap an action;  sow an act and you reap a habit; then sow a habit and you reap a character;  sow a character and you reap a destiny.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson . When we trust in our human reasoning, we leave God out of the equation. We put our trust in ourselves instead of God. Jeremiah 17:5 This is what the Lord says:  “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. 7“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. 8They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” 9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10“I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” We can trust Him, because He is worthy of us trust.   Albert Einstein said "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."   Sari wanted a baby really, really bad. But when a special guest showed up in her yard and announced that she was going to have a baby, she laughed. It was ridiculous to even think that an old lady like herself that had never, I mean NEVER had a baby could have one at her age.  It sounded funny. Genesis 18: 14, 15 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, “shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?” Is anything too hardd for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”15But Sarah denied it,e saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” But something happened that developed faith in Sarah’s heart. The word used here is ago’ It means a belief that doesn’t come from a feeling, but by considering, thinking, pondering, weighing the facts. It reveals a deliberate thought process that shaped her belief that God would keep His promise. The kind of faith that pleases God and produces miracles. Hebrews 11:11 NLT It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. NIV And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled ...

  • Are you tired of living under the circumstances?
    2019/03/13
Download Podcast Have you ever asked someone how they were doing and they answered sadly, “Fine, under the circumstances.”  It’s a nice way to tell you that things are not going good. Maybe they even continued by telling you about all the problems that are going on in their life.  Problems are a part of life.   I understand that the only people that don’t have problems are buried in a cemetery.  I have been around long enough to understand that when people develop a mentality of simply “living under the circumstances”, they are robbing themselves of victories that could become theirs. Listen on iTunes Are you tired of living under the circumstances?  Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! Partnership and Process When we are born into God’s family, we receive both God’s abundant provision of grace and the gift of righteousness. Reign in life through Jesus Christ. God wants you to reign! Did you see that? It’s not my idea, it’s God’s idea from the beginning. It’s not His plan for you to live under the problems of life, under stress, under fear, under lack, under depression. He wants you to reign. But, whether you do or not will depend on what you believe and if you access what is rightfully yours. And, what you believe comes from what you feed your mind and spirit.  Survive? When people walk through dark places it is very easy to develop a “survival mentality.” I believe God has more. I believe “He always causes us to triumph through Christ.” Let me strategically step off the path I was taking for just a minute. Can I share some powerful thought changing, victory taking verses with you? And, would you mind if I put my name in the verse and maybe you should put yours in their too. Isaiah 40:27 NLT says O Jacob, (But I’m going to put my name in there, because sometimes I’ve felt like God wasn’t noticing what was going on!) So, here goes. O Pat, how can you say the LORD does not see your troubles? O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights? 28Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. 29He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. 30Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. 31But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Psalms 78 lists miracle after miracle that God had performed for the Children of Israel. Then verse 40 KJV tells us “they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.” Fear! With the exception of Joshua and Caleb, a whole generation of God’s people failed to receive God’s promise because they were afraid. Their fear is an emotion that comes from wrong thinking. Their fear robbed their faith. They didn’t believe and they didn’t obey. They could control what they believed and what they did, but they couldn’t control their consequences. Therefore, they didn’t receive the promise and they couldn’t blame it on God. Do you see how what they heard fed their fear? Even after Joshua and Caleb tried to encourage them, they didn’t believe. They saw the magnificent fruit, but the stories of giants loomed bigger in their minds and then their hearts. 1 Timothy 4:7 BSB But reject irreverent and silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness. Train your thoughts...               because they are critical to every area of your life.   A baby isn’t born knowing how to walk or talk. It has to learn to do tons of stuff. A baby is curious so it reaches for things,  tries to sit up, roll over and crawl. As its body grows stronger, it practices until it becomes proficient at each step of the progression toward walking. Body. Soul. Spirit. You are a triune being with a soul and a spirit that lives in a body. Your soul is made up of your mind, will and emotions. Your mind is to your soul what your brain is to your body. It is important to realize that your mind can change your brain; affecting your health, emotions and beliefs. Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  Romans 8:5 NIV (A tug of war. Who is going to win? The stronger side! ) We have a storage shed at our house. It is shaped like a two story barn. Wayne stores all kinds of stuff, including junk inside. I could live out in the barn if I wanted to live there.  I don't want to live there because the house is a much better place to live. There’s no air conditioning or beds or bathrooms in the...
