Many think the Reformation began that day in Wittenburg, Germany when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis on the door of the church. But as we've seen in the last 2 episodes, there were some forerunners to Martin Luther who began to sound the alarm on the corruption and heresy going on in the Roman church. And these forerunners were from all over Europe. In this episode, we look at what was happening in the church and its dissenters in the countries of France and Bohemia, where one of the most famous pre-Reformation fathers, Jon Hus, hailed from.

But, God continued to protect His invisible church and raised up bright spots to give people a glimpse of what the biblical church was meant to look like. It's often said, there are no perfect churches, and if you find one, don't join, or you'll just ruin it. That the church has been "imperfect," has been true since it's inception. Almost right from the start, the visible church was infested with false teachings, additional teachings, superstitious beliefs, and other sinful things. When we look back at church history, we see a group of leaders, sometimes getting it right, but sometimes getting it horribly wrong. But one thing we see consistently is that God has been sovereignly working the entire time, and Jesus, the cornerstone of the church, has done some AMAZING things to purify His bride and keep her safe. Where would our army be without our five-star generals?! Those courageous and heroic men who prepare and lead their troops into battle and onto victory! As Peter tells us, this is exactly what our churches need, too! Godly pastors who prepare their congregations for spiritual warfare, and who equip them so they can be victorious! And just as in the army, while an excellent general is crucial, ultimately, a mission's success is dependent upon the troops under him.

They say the two things you can count on is death and taxes. But, if you’re a Christian, you. can add suffering to that list! We don’t all suffer to the same extremes or for the same length of time, but every Christian can count on suffering at some point in their lives. Why does God bring suffering into the lives of His people? What good can come from suffering? Is it some kind of test? And maybe the question most asked, why do we suffer? In the military, the term, “Fall in Line,” means to submit to the rules of a higher authority, to obey, to conform, to agree on a position. In his first letter, Peter tells Christians that we need to “fall in line,” when it comes to dealing with our brothers and sisters in Christ and with our enemies.

Peter also gives us in this letter, one of the more complex verses in Scripture. So complex, that there are a few different interpretation of it - even within Reformed Circles!

In the military, men and women from very different backgrounds, education levels, family dynamics, and cultures have to merge to be one unit - when it comes to their mission, they essentially have to be same person. Paul and Peter were also very different people. Their educations were different, their vocations were different, their family situations were different, and their personalities were different. So how did these vastly different men morph almost into the same person when it came to their Biblical message? It was only after Jesus got a hold of them and the Holy Spirit indwelt in them, that even though their differences were still present, their theologies completely mirrored each other. In this episode, we compare and contrast Peter and Paul as men and as theologians.
