In 1885, Austin had a serial killer. 8 people died in brutal night-time attacks. The target was primarily black women who worked as domestic servants. The murders lasted one year, almost to the day, and then they stopped. They remain completely unsolved. This is the standard narrative regarding the servant girl murders of 1885.
In this 5-part series, we explore another way of looking at the events of 1885, the strange occurrences that happened alongside these murders, and reexamine some suspects that have long been overlooked.
In Episode 1, we begin the year with the gruesome murder of a 22-year-old from Waco, followed by an onslaught of violence against servant women, and a town turning itself inside-out in panic.
