  • Matthew 23.33 | How shall you escape the sentence of hell (1)
    2025/04/26
One of the sternest words the Lord Jesus ever used to sinners is found in Matthew 23.33: You serpents, you brood of vipers, how shall you escape the sentence of hell? Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees, calling them serpents and the sons of vipers. ‘You are the offspring of snakes that cannot escape the damnation of hell!’
There is one topic here that we need to look at, and it concerns the Lord’s teaching about hell. This is a heavy topic. Hell is a subject that we do not want to talk casually about.

  • Matthew 23.33 | How shall you escape the sentence of hell (2)
    2025/04/26
This lesson is the second part of a teaching on hell. We concluded our last lesson by looking at three biblical expressions related to hell: (1) 'the weeping and gnashing of teeth,' (2) 'the fire of hell,' and (3) 'the outer darkness.' We mentioned that though the imagery is different, all these expressions involve the idea of death. The 'weeping and gnashing of teeth' is the reaction of a person before his execution. When you are in the fire of hell, you are consumed. You die. When you are cast out into the outer darkness, you are cut off from God's life. You die.

  • Matthew 23:37-39 | How often would I have gathered your children
    2025/04/25
Jesus' great love for Israel is seen in a passage which is often known as 'Christ's lament over Jerusalem.' Let's read this passage. Matthew 23:37-39. Here Jesus sighed from the depth of His heart and wept. Matthew 23:37. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! 38 Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

  • Matthew 24.1-4 | What will be the sign of your coming
    2025/04/25
In the days of Jeremiah, the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem was God's punishment of the Hebrew nation for turning away from Him. In Matthew 24, Jesus declared that the temple will be destroyed again, for the same reason. This prompted the disciples to ask about the signs of His second coming. Let's read this passage. Matthew 24.1-4.
Matthew 24.1. Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down."
3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

  • Matthew 24.15 | When you see the abomination of desolation
    2025/04/25
Matthew 24 contains a conversation between Jesus and His disciples about the future. Jesus said that one day, the temple will be destroyed. Startled, the disciples asked this question: Tell us, when will these things be (the destruction of the temple), and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" (v. 3 ). In the disciples' mind, these three events (the destruction of the temple, the Lord's return, and the end of the age) would happen at about the same time. Jesus, however, gave no timetable. He did not specify when the three events would occur. What He did was to give signs that will happen right before the end of Jerusalem and the end of the age. The ultimate event that would signal the end will be the desecration of the temple by the 'abomination of desolation.'

  • Matthew 24.24 | False Christs and false prophets will arise
    2025/04/24
The Lord Jesus taught that at the end of the age, many false prophets will appear and they will try to deceive people. They will be able to perform miracles so as to convince people that their claims are true. They will be so convincing that they might even fool God's chosen ones. Let's read this passage. Matthew 24.24.
Matthew 24.24. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

  • Matthew 24.28 | There the vultures will gather
    2025/04/24
While His first coming was quiet, humble and obscure, the Lord Jesus tells us that His second coming will be dramatic, cosmic, and very obvious. The first advent was in the little town of Bethlehem. The second advent will happen in all the skies. He says in Matthew 24.27, For just as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be. And then, in the following verse, we find this mysterious phrase, a phrase that does not seem to fit Jesus' discourse about the end time.
Matthew 24.28. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

  • Luke 21.25-27 | There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars
    2025/04/23
The most significant event yet to occur in human history is the return of Christ to earth. This will be preceded by signs 'in the sun and moon and stars,' signs that will happen in the heavenly places. Jesus taught these signs to enable His followers to be prepared and strengthened when they take place. This is what we read in Luke 21.25-27. Luke 21.25. And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
