  • Episode 5: Decolonizing Mental Healthcare with Ji-Youn Kim
    2022/05/08
Let us guess… you’ve never tried therapy, and if you did, it sucked. One of the reasons might be that mental healthcare often perpetuates white supremacy, heteronormativity, and classism. Yet, the social conditions of patients should not be ignored but are rather crucial to individual and community healing. This episode focuses on transforming mental healthcare from a system abetting oppression to a driver of meaningful change with justice-oriented therapist Ji-Youn Kim (ig: @itsjiyounkim, from so-called Canada). Listen to learn more about collective liberation, rest, transformative justice, colonialism and more...  Happy mental health awareness month!! Thank you Cambusa Wave in Reggio Emilia, Italy for having us in your studio to record this episode in July 2021!  Music: bensound.com

  • Episode 10: Feminist Peace with Ray Acheson
    2021/10/05
This last episode of Material Girls season 1 will discuss the crucial role of feminism in global security leadership by demonstrating how warfare is a patriarchal establishment and how situations of conflict tend to hinder those who were already discriminated against in times of peace. We will try to address different questions (activism, demilitarization, transformative justice, militarized masculinities...) but mainly: what is feminist peace and how can we help to put it into practice?  Our guest Ray Acheson (they/them) is an organizer, activist, and writer working to abolish violent structures and build peace and justice. They lead the disarmament program at the Women-s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) the world's oldest feminist peace organization. They serve on the steering group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its work to ban nuclear weapons, as well as the steering committees of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots and the International Network on Explosive Weapons. In the episode we also discuss their new book "Banning the Bomb, Smashing the Patriarchy".
