  • 16. Madhushala, OSHO - Acharya Rajneesh and Bachchan
    2021/02/04

Circa 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams. Such as –

Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation -

Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance –

There was also a fallout between Osho and Dr Bachchan, how and why? Let’s take a listen :-)

In between, we also talk about the movie “Rose Island” when re read these lines –

  • 15. Bachchan's Madhushala, Shyama – Ek Laghu Kalika Nirali
    2020/12/31

Circa 1926, we are talking about Shyama, who was just 14 years old when she got married to Bachchan, who was barely 19. We will share the story about their love and life journey, and how Bachchan ji found her to be a free-spirited, always joyful, cheerful girl, like Shelley’s Skylark – “an unbodied joy whose race is just begun”.

She was smiling even in her death, something that is expressed in this line –

She was also the first one who could see a great poet in Bachchan and did everything in her powers to keep his poetry going. It was during her lifetime that “Madhushala” was written and published. She made a huge impact even in her short life.

Bachchan used to call her “Joy” and she called him “Suffering” – why? Let’s find out! :-)

  • 14. Bachchan's Madhushala, Rang-Birangi Satrangini
    2020/12/12

While we started with a story from Armenia last episode, this time we are going to Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and how this trip turned out to be a perfect gift for the poet of Madhushala. When Madhushala was translated in Russian – the title meant a bouquet of colors and the poem has all sorts of Roop, Rang, Ras, Gandh in her spirit.

    And there is music in its poetry:

Then we talk about how Madhushala is above and beyond all sorts of divisions, like in these two lines

    Or

On the same topic of Mandir, Masjid – we also take a cue from Ghalib –

  • 13. Bachchan's Madhushala, Din Beeta Lo Raat Gayi
    2020/11/29

When Bachchan ji went to Armenia (circa 1970), a local (lady) singer wanted to buy a drink for him but the poet of Madhushala politely refused with a heartful cheers. The poet kept his vow of not drinking ever again.

There is also a poetic description of different times of the day – Daybreak, Dusk, and after dark. The poet has beautifully weaved an otherwise boring day into familiar symbols of Madhushala.

Then a verse about Shri Krishna and who all Madhushala can make dance to her tunes!

  • 12. Bachchan's Madhushala, Madira ka Tyag aur Pratigya
    2020/11/19

It’s popularly known that while Dr Bachchan wrote Madhushala aka The House of Wine, he never touched any liquor – well, that’s not entirely true. He started drinking years after Madhushala but gave it up around the year 1944, as a sacrifice for something – now that’s linked with Amitabh Bachchan, and how?

We will also go over the beauty of Himalayas and Kanchanjangha as depicted in the poetry of Madhushala, with quotes from Dinkar, Kalidasa, and Iqbal, such as:

    Or –

Now, where does Steve Jobs fit into all this, let’s check out ;-)

  • 11. Bachchan's Madhushala, Mrig Trishna
    2020/11/06

Mrig Trishna or Mirage - this is the story of two women in Mr Bachchan’s life and the reflection of these experiences on his poetry. Circa 1925, Champa who was Karkal’s wife, and a dream-world that a young Harivansh and his best friend Karkal had weaved together with Champa, followed by two tragic deaths.

Fast forward to 1939, then comes Iris, one with blue eyes and light brown hair who inspired one of his most beautiful poems but not until 13 years in the land of Ireland. Iris proved to be a mirage, however. As he then said – “चल अभागे मन, कहीं अब और मैं तुझको रमाऊँ” ...

As part of these stories, we are also reading a couple of poems from Ramdhari Singh Dinkar -

And a “Savaiya” from Raskhan on Shri Krishna...

  • 10. Bachchan's Madhushala, Kavi aur Sipahi
    2020/10/19
Summer of 1942, there is a group of soldiers marching from their college to the railway station. One of them is Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. But, what was a poet doing among these soldiers? As his idol WB Yeats once said – “the fascination of what is difficult”, the poet in him was looking for something to challenge, fight and conquer. It’s also said that there is a woman in every man, and vice versa. Maybe it was an attempt let the man in him be in the driving seat, as visible in these lines - “ओ नवचेतन – तू अपने मन की नारी को – अस्वाभाविक बीमारी को – उठ दूर हटा – तू अपने मन का, पुरुष जगा”Then we also talk English poets PB Shelley and John Keats, known for their romantic poetry. While they were born three years apart, they died one year apart and had their tomb in the same vicinity. We talk about them while reading these lines from Madhushala – “स्वर्ग, नरक या जहाँ कहीं भी तेरा जी हो लेकर चल, ठौर सभी हैं एक तरह के साथ रहे यदि मधुशाला”Welcome to the 10th episode of Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry - Madhushala (मधुशाला). • 9. Bachchan's Madhushala, Main Jawaan Hoon
    2020/10/08

In 1954, when Bachchan ji landed in Mumbai after sailing for 18 days on his return journey from London, there was a Kavi Goshthi organized in his honour. He was asked to recite some poems, but he recited a fun parody instead, rhyming with the names of his most popular poems :-) such as -

Then we also talk about Robert Browning’s “Rabbi Ben Ezra” and Hafeez Jalandhari’s “Abhi to main jawaan hoon” while talking about different stages of life.

Welcome to the 9th episode of Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry - Madhushala (मधुशाला). We are covering verses 77,79,81,82,84. This is a podcast of Hindi Poems and Poets.
