Today we start a new worship series called, "Out of Context." For the next four weeks we will be looking at four verses people love to quote, put on their walls, or engrave on their jewerly or bodies. We will take each of those scriptures and put them back into the context they were written. Then we will ask the question, does this verse really mean what we think it means. Today we look at the most quoted scripture in Hobby Lobby and in locker rooms, Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

On this last Sunday of the Christmas Season, Epiphany Sunday, we celebrate a lot. Not only do we have communion and a baptism, but we also celebrate God putting on flesh and coming to make his home here, in flesh and bone, among us. He doesn't just come for the holy family or Jewish shepherds. God puts on flesh for all people, even forgeiners like the Magi and even all of us in 2025.

We celebrate the incarnation tonight, God putting on flesh and coming to earth. Tonight we sing carols, light candles, and worship the new born king. Special music starts at 6:30pm and worship will start at 7:00pm. Whereever you find yourself tonight, please know that God came to this world to show you love, joy, peace, and hope. For the next three years we will be helping support a group of youth and children go from beggers to bosses as they become self-sufficent through receiving micro-grants, and learning life skills and vocational training to support their families and build up their communities. John the Baptist's message is front and center but do we have ears to actually listen or do they fall deaf to this yearly message? If we have a hard time with John's message to take our faith seriously, then how are we going to follow the babe in the manger. God's son, Jesus Christ?

Music fills this time of year, pointing to the realities of two babys we celebrate. Today, we hear the story of Zechariah's song as he holds his child, John the Baptist, in his arms. As we continue to prepare this Advent season, may we find and experience the depth of the carols that make up our season. May we pause and remember to be open to their call for mercy and peace.

Today we start our yearly journey of Advent. We begin the Christian year off by looking forward to Jesus's second advent, or second coming, while preparing ourselves to celebrate Jesus's first coming on Christmas. In the text today we learn that apololyptic texts were written to give people hope in times of dispair and great turmoil. There are many in our lives that need this same type of hope too.
