  • Unsolved Murders SA S1 - Episode 008 - The Smit Murders
    2025/08/14

On 22 November 1977, a Tuesday, Robert was at his office in Springs, wrapping up the last bits and pieces of his political campaign.

Jeanne was out running errands in the afternoon, chauffeured by the family’s driver, Daniel Tshabalala.

Daniel would later inform investigators that Jeanne had returned from a busy day in the city, at approximately 18:10 and, the last time he saw her alive, was when he left the residence at 18:50.

Robert’s office workers assisted investigators with building a timeline when they noted that somewhere between 19:14 and 19:40, they had received a phone call from Jeanne asking for her husband’s whereabouts.

Jeanne, according to the workers, wanted to inform her husband that the anti-National Party voters he was due to meet with at his residence had arrived and were awaiting him.

Jeanne’s body was later found slumped over the phone, an indication that she met her fate in the worst manner imaginable, shortly after she had dropped the phone.

    2025/08/14

Siphamandla Madikane was 10 years old in 2013. At that age, Madikane had his entire life ahead of him.

For his single mother, Nokukhanya, Siphamandla was a beacon of his family’s future. His sister, Bongiwe Madikane, was 23 years olf at the time and her role was to provide auxiliary support to her mother in raising the young boy.

His family described him as a well-mannered and playful kid. His uncle Sibabalo, adored Siphamandla as “a bright boy and I was hoping he could make a difference in the family.”

Sunday 3 November 2013 was just like any other weekend for Nokukhanya. It was a relatively warm day and as it had become a norm at the time, there was no electricity in the area of Ramaphosa they lived in.

She did not know it at the time but that Sunday morning and early afternoon were the final moments Nokukhanya spent with her son.

    2025/08/14

On Monday 28 August 2000, Leslie was scheduled for a flight to George to lead a product-focused seminar at the Liberty branch.

As it was the norm, Leslie arrived in George and checked in for a night’s stay at the Protea Hotel situated at King George Park.

The hotel was only a 10-minute drive from the airport and after her training, which was scheduled for Tuesday, the 28-year-old would proceed to catch a flight back to Cape Town.

Hotel records indicate that Leslie checked in at the hotel that day and was allocated Room 205, an outside suite that offered the Liberty Life representative a sense of privacy.

Nobody knows if Leslie left her room at any point after she had checked in.

The last time Christine had heard from Leslie that fateful evening was at approximately 20:00.
