Last week, the Department of Education announced that it would not seize social security benefits from borrowers who have student loans that are in default. This is a reversal of the April 2025 announcement that collections activity on defaulted student loans would begin on May 5. This is a huge relief for social security recipients, but other collections activities are still in play.
