It's opening day for the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, and at the ESG Insider podcast we're continuing our Sustainability in Sports miniseries. This week we're talking with Julia Palle, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E, the motorsport championship launched a decade ago for racing electric vehicles. She explains how Formula E is taking a holistic approach to sustainability that includes environmental and social issues, how EV technology is evolving, and the central role of data in sustainability decision making. "Data is always the starting point," she says, whether the sport is managing its carbon footprint or measuring its social impact. Julia also talks about the leadership role that sporting organizations can play in achieving global climate goals — for example, through Formula E's work with the UN Sports for Climate Action initiative. The sporting industry has the capacity to "gather billions of people and inspire them through the power of sport to adopt more sustainable practices in their everyday lives," Julia says.
