 Attributes of Your Best Business Coach/Hiring a Business Coach While there are exceptions, Founders and CEOs of new businesses typically know about the industry-specific area of their business. But most lack knowledge about all of the business areas needed to run a successful enterprise. To make matters worse, “you don’t know what you don’t know”. Despite having a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Marketing; working for a Fortune 500 company as an account manager for five years, and being a successful private-practice Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist for two decades, I was ill-equipped to pull off everything involved to launch a successful coaching and consulting business. From costly mistakes in selecting a business niche; not understanding the sales process; having no clue how to network; not understanding financials and how to manage the money aspect of my business; making poor hiring decisions; poor time-management skills; challenges delegating; and business model issues; my journey toward having a profitable business was much harder than it needed to be. And it wasn’t that I tried to figure this out all alone. I invested a significant amount of cash and time in business coaching, mentors, consultants, and programs with mixed results. While I am a huge advocate for hiring a right-fit business coach, making the wrong choice on what professional to bring into your business can dangerously steer you in the wrong direction and even be the death knell on your business’s survival.
