Des Hamilton is a Glasgow born, London based, BAFTA winning Casting Director. Des has worked in film and television for over 15 years.
Some of his work includes casting Jojo Rabbit, The King starring Timothee Chamalet, Ordinary Love with Liam Neesson, High Life with Robert Pattinson, the House that Jack Built with Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, as well as casting Top Boy for Netflix, for which he won the 2020 BAFTA for Best Scripted Casting.
Des is well known for his street-casting methods, where he finds raw, undiscovered talent, who have often never acted before. He famously street cast Thomas Turgoose in “This is England”, Tom Sweet in “The Childhood of a Leader” Kathleen McDermott in "Morvern Callar", for which she won a BAFTA for best newcomer.
Des shares what it was like growing up as a working class kid in Glasgow and finding his way into the world of film and television, how he discovers raw talent on the streets of London, how the cast and crew of Top Boy have become family, what it was like winning a BAFTA during lockdown with his son in Paris (and whom he would like to present his award to him). We discuss his nation-wide search for the character of Jojo in Jojo Rabbit, overcoming the addiction battles of his youth, and the importance of kindness in the industry (and in life).
It was an absolute privilege (and such blast) interviewing Des. The conversation is raw and honest (it’s a longer episode than usual), but well worth the listen.
