When the body perceives a threat, it activates the fight or flight response, to trigger the release of hormones (adrenaline & cortisol) to prepare the body for the threat. This is helpful in the short term for imminent danger but oftentimes the stress response is activated all throughout the day during everyday stressors. Overtime, the body gets the signal that it is not safe.
