Don't let social anxiety hold you back says Mita Mistry

  • サマリー

  • Social anxiety is an intense fear of being judged or humiliated in social situations to the point where you really want to avoid them.

This is not the same as the normal nervousness that many of us feel when we go into a new experience such as meeting new people, especially when they are deemed as ‘high stakes’ such as a new boss or partner’s family.

When it becomes a problem is where you might be avoiding everyday social interactions such as bumping into the neighbours or fearing having to speak to people in a supermarket queue.
“As humans we are hard-wired for connection,” explains Mita Mistry, author of How to Understand and Deal With Social Anxiety, who says that the often-feared ‘small talk’ is actually good for us. “When we start to avoid those social interactions, it’s not that good for our resilience as our stress response may be activated.”

In this episode of ULTIMATE GUIDE TO LIFE, Steve Randall speaks to Mita about her book and finds out how we can all do some simple things to ease social anxiety.
