"I never understood what she meant, and I didn't think for 1 minute it would be a parent's curse until I had children of my own. Both of my boys put me through the parental wringer as infants. Both of them waited until we were in public to well, how shall I put this more delicately? Loudly pass gas. And of course, no one believed the baby did it. Being a parent has been, I've got to say, an educational experience."

"But once you begin to find your resources and everything falls into place as much as it can, you start to realize that this is going to be a very unique and a very emotional roller coaster of a ride. There's so much negativity surrounding the diagnosis of autism. I want to touch on the positivity of it for right now. My son has almost become a teacher to me. He has caused me to slow down, appreciate the small things in life, like the beauty of a sunset."

"But you know, whenever I became a parent myself, I too became the master at finding the humor in certain situations. It was either that or sit in the corner and eat little Debbie snack cakes and cry because my toddler decided to play dot to dot with a magic marker on the family dalmatian. Studies have shown that laughing is a great way to relieve tension and stress, and it's extremely beneficial in the long run because it just makes you feel better."

"Once it was published, I thought the hard part was done, and that was my writing the book. Boy, was I ever wrong. I found out that I had to promote that thing. I had no idea where to start. I was totally clueless. So I looked it up on the Internet, and I found a few good ideas, which I implemented."

"In celebration of mothers, I would like to read a story I wrote a short time ago called June and the Gang Would Be Proud. As an adolescent, I believe parenting would be a breeze. If I had known motherhood entailed fishing cell phones from toilets and pulling Cocoa Puffs out of noses, I'd have become a nun. I would have evicted baby chicks from my playhouse, swaddled dolls and listened to every conversation about hemorrhoids, infant bowel movements, and coupons my mother's quilting group had instead."

"I can almost lay money that the same things were said to the first people who tried to harness electricity and the Wright brothers. Something that I often thought about, if these gentlemen would have given up, we would have been delayed having electricity for several years. And who knows? Maybe no one would have had the determination or the guts to try to construct the first airplane."

"Or he would also cry because he couldn't let mom and Dad know what he wanted. His parents also noticed that he had poor fine and gross motor skills. He couldn't grip a crayon, so, of Course, there was no crayon Marks on the wall. But he also had Difficulty manipulating the large Lego blocks. He couldn't put those together. So they did what all parents Would do in this situation, and they found therapy for this Young man."

"In fact, one year, she purchased a beautiful doll house for me, hoping that I would be the little prim and pristine girl that she always wanted. And like I said, to her horror, I took all the dolls out of the doll house, and I moved baby chicks in there and would often reenact soap operas with my baby chicks. And of course, no baby chicks were harmed during that event."
