  • Plant More Trees, with Creature and The Woodland Trust
    2023/05/08

A fine example of making our response to the climate crisis both local and tangible! This is the final episode in an accidental three-part series on creating work that inspires action for the planet.

I chatted with two of the brains behind The Woodland Trust's new campaign - Hanisha Kotecha and Josh Dickins, of creative agency Creature.

    We covered a lot:

    • Favourite trees
    • Trees as the UK's climate emergency response
    • A wildly collaborative way of working
    • Measuring success (number of trees planted and homes not underwater)
    • Unexpected brand voice (sardonic but not unhelpful)
    • And much, much more!

    • We're in an imagination battle
    • Focusing on the many opportunities of creating a more sustainable society
    • The story behind giving everyone at nice + serious a vote on whether to take on a brief

  • EP4. Creativity in a Crisis, with Reuben Turner
    2023/01/31

Reuben Turner (creative consultant at Rewild Creative and formerly ECD and Creative Partner at The Good Agency) has been a thoughtful, provocative voice in the social good space for over two decades. So who better to talk to during a permacrisis (or is it metacrisis)?

He believes that now is exactly the time when we need creators to imagine a new way out of this mess, and yet it's precisely the time creativity is getting sidelined. Then, before we get too depressed, he shares some examples where creativity is breaking through despite that:

    • Reimagining the way things can be done – in everything from medicine to fashion
    • Agencies becoming more collaborative and diverse, and doing better work as a result
    • A new generation of creative that doesn't care about winning awards or getting the credit
    • Creative protest
    • Some excellent further reading recommendations

    Books we recommended
Design Emergency by Alice Rawsthorn and Paola Antonelli
    Citizens by Jon Alexander
Blueprint for Revolution by Srdza Popovic

  • EP3. Bank Accounts for Good, with HSBC and Wunderman Thompson
    2023/01/09

This is the story of a group of people who work for a bank seeing an injustice and trying to fix it.

And then a whole host of other people who took that little germ of an idea and added a huge dollop of creative magic to turn it into something bigger that’s helped thousands of people.

I'm joined by Sarah Mayall, Head of Brand Marketing at HSBC, and Mike Watson, CD at Wunderman Thomson, their creative agency.

    2023/01/09

Off the back of winning in-House Agency of the year at the Inside Out Awards, I chatted with Helen Jones, Creative Director at Shelter.

We talked about their recent Cost of living hacks campaign, how it came about, and then Helen shared a whole bunch of helpful ideas including:

    • Selling good creative within the organisation
    • Hiring creative thinkers (on a budget)
    • Not being scared of research groups
    • Ideas before designs – bringing agency ways of working in-house
    • Always be building relationships
