Brighton Fringe Special - My Chat with Havilah Davis and Jenny Coate about Rootless Tree

  • サマリー

  • In the words of Tennessee Williams, "The scene is memory and is therefore non-realistic. Memory takes a lot of poetic license. It omits some details; others are exaggerated, according to the emotional value of the articles it touches, for memory is seated predominantly in the heart." [The Glass Menagerie]

The play, Rootless Tree, is no different. It's a family history of a great grandmother I never knew, but only heard of through the memory of my aging Aunt. She spoke of her great grandfather, a traveling salesman who, unknown to all, had secretly married two women and lived two secret lives for many years. When the Great Depression hit, unable to support them both, he moved them into one house and there they lived.

Is this a true history? Yes. But the details aren't to be trusted. They're memory after all.
