  • Talking Suicide Prevention with Rose Rowkins and Hema Patel
    2024/10/07
🎙️ This Month on the Brighton Business Show: Suicide Prevention with Rose Rowkins and Hema Patel 🎙️

⚠️ Warning ⚠️ This episode contains content that may be alarming to some listeners. We do talk about suicide which we know can be distressing.

This month, we bring you an essential conversation on suicide prevention with special guests, Rose Rowkins and Hema Patel. As the rates of death by suicide continue to rise, we're diving deep into the root causes and the urgent need for societal change.

    Key Statistics:
    • 57% of suicides are linked to economic pressures
    • 52% are connected to physical health challenges
    • Each year, 200 children tragically lose their lives to suicide

It's a difficult time for many, with more people feeling overwhelmed, helpless, and disconnected from a sense of community. Mental health struggles are on the rise, and alarmingly, 1 in 6 people who die by suicide are taking antidepressants—a potential factor that must not be ignored.

Rose and Hema discuss the importance of addressing the root causes, calling for government action to lead the charge on economic reform, societal support, and creating stronger communities that foster a sense of belonging. We also explore the impact of social media, addiction, and the growing epidemic of people not feeling "enough."

    Top Tips for Suicide Prevention:
    • Shake off the stress: Literally shake your body to release tension.
    • Affirm yourself: Look in the mirror and remind yourself, "I am enough."
    • Reach out for help: Don’t hesitate to seek support if you’re struggling.
    • Check in with others: If you see someone struggling, ask them how they are.
    • Invest in training: Consider suicide prevention training for your organization to create a supportive environment.

Join us for this powerful episode that aims to break the silence, raise awareness, and provide actionable steps for suicide prevention. Let’s come together to make a difference in our communities.

This month, we’re joined by the incredible Lisa Kerr, ACC, CALC, FCA, FCSI, Assoc. CIPD, and James Dempster for a powerful conversation on neurodiversity and the realities of being neurodivergent.

We explore why neurodiversity isn’t a “superpower” and challenge the misconception that "everyone is on the spectrum." Lisa and James offer profound insights into the unique challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals and highlight practical steps we can all take to foster inclusivity.
