Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 76 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Tuesday morning 17 September 2024.

    Happy birthday Mr. P.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and a cool 21 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Rugby Union: Japan smashed Manu Samoa 17-49 in Tokyo Sunday, so will now play the Fiji Water Flying Fijians in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, in Osaka, Japan next weekend.

While Tonga play USA for third spot. Canada finished in 5th.

In Rugby League: Manly stunned the Bulldogs 22-24 in a thrilling elimination final, scoring one of the great tries to end the season for Cameron Ciraldo’s pack.

Anthony Seibold’s side will now face the Sydney Roosters in the second semifinal next weekend, with the winner of that game then coming up against the Storm in the preliminary final.

In Football: Liverpool’s perfect start under new Manager Arne Slot came to an abrupt end as Nottingham Forest stunned Anfield with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the only goal 18 minutes from time, to secure Forest’s first away league win against Liverpool in 55 years.

And the strength in depth of Chelsea’s bloated squad, assembled for over £1Billion in transfer fees, paid off after Christopher Nkunku came off the bench to score the winner four minutes from time for Chelsea 1-0 at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Jadon Sancho, introduced as a half-time substitute, impressed on his first appearance since joining from Man U on the final day of the transfer window.

In Sports Biz: NBC is set to take over the NBA’s new “B” package of media rights next year for US$2.5Billion annually.

Great, except the problem is; they will be paying nearly the same price as incumbent “A” package rights holder ESPN, which will shell out US$2.6B per season over the 11-year contract.

NBC obviously bid way too much!

“We have a plan. We know exactly what we paid … and we have a rationale for why that makes sense,” NBCUniversal Media said.

Yeah right NBC – you screwed up - period.

And finally in Combat Sports: Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez beat Puerto Rican-American knockout artist Edgar Berlanga on points to defend his three Super Middleweight World boxing titles – the World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization titles in Las Vegas yesterday.

Alvarez knocked down the previously unbeaten Berlanga in the third round and punished him throughout their 12-round fight.

Alvarez was awarded the fight 118-109 by two judges and by 117-110 from the third.

“Now what are they going to say – that I fight younger fighters? Before they say I fought older fighters. Now what are they going to say,” the Mexican superstar asked after the fight?

“I’m the best fighter in the world,” added Alvarez, who improved to 62-2-2 and retained his belts.

    That’s a wrap Peeps!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 75 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Sunday morning 15 September 2024.

    Happy birthday Pitila Thompson!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and 23 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Rugby Union: Robust Number 8 Elia Canakaivata scored twice for the Flying Fijians win over USA 3-22, to claim a finals berth in the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo, where earlier yesterday, Tonga trumped Canada 17-30 for 5th spot.

We tip Manu Samoa to talofalava Japan later today in the second semifinal.

In Rugby League: The Storm are through to the NRL preliminary final after trashing the Sharks 10-37 on the back of hat-trick to Harry Grant and a double to Will Warbrick at AAMI Park yesterday.

And the Newcastle Knights superstar fullback, Kalyn Ponga was at his brilliant best in Townsville, but couldn’t do it all himself.

The Cowboys veteran Kyle Feldt wound back the clock, while co-captains Reuben Cotter and Tom Dearden scored, as they came from behind to beat the Knights 16-28 in a hard-fought elimination final win last night.

So the brave Knights are gone.

Today it’s the Bulldogs versus Manly at 4:05pm at Accor Stadium where the winner lives to fight another day, while the loser goes home.

In the NFL: “He’s going to live longer than he’s going to play football, so I’d be honest and tell him to retire and take care of his family,” Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce said, after watching Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins suffer his third concussion in three years.

Pierce added, “It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it. Played the game, I haven’t witnessed anything like I’ve seen that’s happened to him three times. Scary. You can see right away, the players’ faces on the field. You can see the sense of urgency to get Tua help.

In Sports Biz: NBA superstar Steph Curry launched the first store for his brand, which is tied to Under Armour, in Chengdu, China.

Kings All-Star De’Aaron Fox, the first signature athlete to sign with Curry Brand, joined the Warriors legend at the store opening.

Curry is also promoting the launch of his latest signature shoe, Curry 12, while Fox’s first signature shoe, Fox 1, releases later this year.

And finally in Combat Sports: Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez aims to turn the tables on knockout artist Edgar Berlanga, when he defends his three Super Middleweight World boxing titles in Las Vegas.

“It’s easy to say you’ll knock me out, but it’s much more difficult to do ,” said Alvarez, who puts his World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization belts on the line against the top rated WBA contender.

“I’ve prepared for the knockout. I love the feeling of a knockout. I’m going to do my best to get it done,” Canelo said.

    That’s a wrap Peeps!

Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 74 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Saturday morning 14 September 2024.

Happy birthday Ron Blake & Dean Jennings!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and a sizzling 25 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Rugby Union: The Super Rugby Pacific 2025 season will feature an additional round of action, including more family-friendly afternoon fixtures and three Sunday afternoon games.
    • 11 teams will play 14 regular season games, consisting of seven home games and seven away games, with two byes.
    • Teams will play four teams twice, with a focus on rivalry match-ups, and the six remaining teams once
    • The top six teams on the table at the end of the regular season will qualify for the three-week Finals Series

In Rugby League: Panthers skipper Nathan Cleary has only played 11 NRL games this season, but his 12th last night was a masterclass, leading Penrith to another preliminary final.

Cleary finished with 47M run, four tackle busts, three line-break assists and three try assists to guide the Panthers to a 30-10 rout of the Sydney Roosters in their qualifying final.

Today at 4:05pm at AAMI Park in Melbourne, the Melbourne Storm take on the Cronulla Sharks.

In Football: The hearing over 115 financial irregularity charges filed against Manchester City by the Premier League starts Monday.

The EPL is accusing the winners of its last four titles of breaching financial rules.

Manchester City could face a penalty as strict as outright relegation.

In the NFL: Miami Dolphins star Samoan quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa left the field in distressing scenes after another brutal head knock during the Dolphins clash against the Buffalo Bills yesterday.

Tagovailoa, who signed a four-year US$211Million contract extension in July, has a history of concussion in his short NFL career, having suffered two in 2022, just four days apart, which resulted in the firing of the neurological consultant who cleared Tagovailoa to play on after the first one.

The NFL has since altered its concussion policy, allowing a medical spotter to have players removed from the game if they show concussion symptoms.

In Sports Biz: Football giants Manchester City plan to introduce an Oasis-themed alternate jersey, in collaboration with Noel Gallagher and Puma.

The recently reformed band hails from Manchester, where the other half of Oasis – Liam Gallagher supports crosstown rivals Manchester United.

And finally in Combat Sports: “Yeah, why not?” Saul Canelo Alvarez told BoxingScene. “Easy. Very easy money… I will knock him out any time I want. One, two or three rounds – whatever I want.”

This after UFC President and CEO, Dana White told BoxingScene to “put a pin on” a potential fight between Canelo and Conor McGregor.

Canelo has wiped out the boxing Super Middleweight division over the last four years, with Edgar Berlanga up next on Saturday night in what many assume will be a cakewalk for boxing’s biggest breadwinner.

McGregor meanwhile, predicts that UFC306, which is also being held Saturday night in Las Vegas at The Sphere, will blow Alvarez’s fight out of the water: "Canelo is a cornflake," said McGregor. "He doesn't sell.”

Even though Alvarez perceives McGregor as child's play, the crossover fight could generate big business, but first McGregor needs to return to the UFC cage and pick up some wins.

McGregor, 36, has not fought since suffering a broken leg in 2021.

And he wants to be President of Ireland!
