  • Season Finale Part 1: Will Compton
    2022/07/06
Part 1 of the season finale of the podcast is the best one yet. We bring Will Compton on the show to discuss his football career progression all the way back from his high school days where he was recruited by Bo and Carl Pelini and deciding to commit to Nebraska. Will discusses essentially his entire career at Nebraska and how that eventually transitioned into him earning a spot on multiple rosters in the NFL. Will’s recruiting story is one to share. He talks about the late push Nebraska made on him to get him to commit to the university and how he might have gotten passed up by some bigger programs until late in the process. He discusses Bo’s personality off the field and what how they developed their culture off the field in the weight room with the strength staff and how that was an integral part to making his career what it became at Nebraska - and in turn helping develop him down the road mentally in the NFL. Detail is obviously an important focus for any NFL player in the film room. The guys discuss the importance of game prep and how to break down film by having a purpose and procedure to football study. Will has nurtured their relationship with Barstool Sports as an affiliate and shouts them out for being hands off, but receptive for any other podcasts they do with their media company. Part 2 will continue the conversation next Wednesday!

In this episode we talk about how Tim ended up playing for Nebraska for Bo after attending Mooney. He talks about his recruiting process after playing for a run first offense and getting the opportunity to play at the division one level. He talks about how much the University of Nebraska meant for him. He speaks to the difficulty of recruiting Nebraska has, but how once they get recruits on campus, it becomes easy to fall in love with after meeting the people and experiencing the awesome college town there. He talks about the Cardinal Mooney / Nebraska pipeline and how he ended up committing to Nebraska as one of the last signees. Tim talks about meeting his wife and now has another family in Nebraska. Bo talks about recruiting him and how they made a final recruiting push on him late. Bo talks about some recruiting flaws many coaches make by making decisions on recruits based on solely what other schools have offered them. Tim talks about how they didn’t have a highly rated recruiting class, but they were all tremendous competitors in everything they did - even with activities outside the football facility like basketball, darts, and cornhole at their favorite Lincoln restaurants and bars. Tim talks about the best basketball players they had on their football team at Nebraska. He drops his favorite atmospheres in college football to play in both in the Big 12 and the Big 10. He talks about playing at Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, etc. He talks a lot about how much he respects guys that he played against like Braxton Miller and Denard Robinson. He talks about how they were the first team to play in State College at Penn State amongst crazy outside circumstances amongst the Jerry Sandusy scandal. Tim talks about what it was like to go from playing for Bo at Nebraska and then ending up coaching with him and becoming a colleague. He talks about his experience as a coach in his hometown at Youngstown State. Bo talks about how having former players coming back to coach their teams adds to the cultural value of football teams and how it helped his teams in the past. Tim talks about getting in trouble at Nebraska and some funny stories about Bo addressing the issue as a coach. Bo also tells a hilarious story about Tim trying to skip class to try and go watch Monday Night Football. Bo and Tim discuss their Cleveland sports fandom and animosity for the Cleveland Guardians name change from the Cleveland Indians (We should clip this tim makes a great joke here “what are they guarding”) They also talk about their Pittsburgh Penguins fandom and their connection to Jake Geutzel who is from Omaha. Tim talks about how much it meant to him playing for and working with Bo at Nebraska and Youngstown State. He talks about the other coaches at Nebraska that made an impact for him in his life. He specifically mentions the strength staff led by James Dobson at Nebraska and how they molded him into a better player and person. Tim tells some stories about weigh-ins and chugging protein shakes before lifts at Nebraska. Pat adds in and talks about his former teammate Jeremiah Owusu in a similar light and his experience in the weight room with him. Tim talks about playing with players from all different parts of the country at Nebraska and how he got to meet and interact with a bunch of different types of people, by telling a few touching stories. Tim chimes in more about the walk-on program at Nebraska and how much they meant to the program while he was there. Bo and Tim tell some stories about the pranks that Bo played on players and staff during fall camp and spring ball at Nebraska and LSU to keep it lighthearted amongst a typically serious time. Tim talks about playing with extremely talented and electric players like Yoshi Hardrick and Taylor Martinez. Bo talks about how Taylor Martinez was such an electric QB before getting held back by some injuries. Tim talks a little bit more about the differences between high school football and college football. They discuss the importance that Youngstown has had on them along with so many other players like the Mccarthy brothers, Mario Manningham, Maurice Clarrett, and John Simon. They talk about how Youngstown has been affected by industrial economic changes, but still produces a tremendous amount of player/coaches that go on to have success at a high level in athletics. Wrapping up Bo tells a great golf story about Tim and how much of a competitor he is and how golfing in Youngstown is heavy on gambling.
