Gwinnett County officials plan to opt out of a new statewide floating homestead exemption, favoring their existing Value Offset Exemption (VOE) for better tax breaks. The VOE, in place since 2001, freezes property tax values at the base year, protecting homeowners from rising market values. The county's decision follows other local governments opting out, with public hearings scheduled before the March 1 deadline. The county's property tax is separate from school and city taxes, which often increase with market values.
