  • S3E3 - The Dads take on All In The Family, Andy Griffith, and TV in the 1960s
    2024/09/10

The story of the Sixties continues in Episode 3 of Season 3 as Dave and Aaron are joined by friend of the podcast Josh Strychalski to talk about All In the Family and TV in the 1960s.

We tackle some pretty tough questions in this episode, such as:

    · Was Archie Bunker a precursor to Michael Scott?

    · Why has Dave never seen Gunsmoke?

    · Was there really a time when The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was edgy?

    · Was Green Acres really the place to be?

    · Could a show like All In the Family be made today?

    · Is Get Smart rewatchable?

These and other hard-hitting questions are what our listeners have come to expect, and this episode definitely delivers.

  • S3E2 - The Dads Take On American Graffiti
    2024/08/27

The story of the Sixties continues in episode 2 of Season 3 as the dads take on the classic film American Graffiti.

Dave enjoyed this movie. Despite it being ranked as one of the America Film Institute’s Top 100 films of all time, Mateo didn’t love it. Aaron was somewhere in the middle, feeling that the movie is worthy of respect, if only for the fact that without it we never get Star Wars. Besides, it has a great soundtrack and a young Harrison Ford, so it’s worth watching at least once in your life.

Just to warn you before you listen, this might be our most offensive episode. If you are French or work at Braum’s you might want to skip this episode. Actually, listen to this episode and then send us an email telling us how wrong Mateo is. Yeah, that’s a way better idea.

  • Episode 12: The Dads Take on A Square Meal, the Great Depression, Liver Loaf, and Our Family's Culinary Habits.
    2023/12/21

In this episode the dads take on A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression by Jane Ziegelman and Andrew Coe.

Start the episode because the dads are funny, and generally a delight to listen to, but finish the episode for the enlightening conversations about liver loaf, creamed spaghetti with carrots, and prune pudding.

Also, if you need a good receipt for meat and turnip pie, here is one from the book.

Cook 1 quart diced turnips tender in 1 quart boiled salted water. Thicken with flour mixed with cold water. Add one pint cut-up canned meat, and pour into a shallow pan or baking dish. Cover with dough and bake in a hot oven. For this dough sift 1 quart of flour with 1½ teaspoons salt and 2 tablespoons baking powder. Work in 4 tablespoons of fat. Add enough liquid (water, or fresh milk or dried or evaporated milk made up with water) about 1½ cups to make a soft dough. Roll out and pat the dough about ¾ inch thick. Cover the pie with the sheet of dough or cut it into biscuits and place them close together over the top of the meat-and-turnip mixture.

  • Episode 11: The Dads Take on A Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan
    2023/11/14

In this episode the dads take on A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan.

A Fever in the Heartland is about a dark episode in a dark time of American history. All three of the dads believe that reading books like this is necessary to understanding history, but before you listen to this episode know that the book contains detailed accounts of violent racism, sexual assault, and a number of other things that the dads are quite comfortable calling evil and wicked.

Our usual light-hearted banter still exists in places, but at some point the wickedness of the KKK is inescapable, even if you try talking about it in Kermit the Frog’s voice.
