Nearly one in three older adults are chronically dehydrated, with consequences far more serious than just feeling thirsty. Our bodies, which are 60-65% water, rely on proper hydration for everything from joint cushioning and temperature regulation to nutrient transport and brain function.
• Age-related changes make dehydration more likely: decreased thirst sensitivity, less water in the body, less efficient kidneys, and medication effects
• Watch for signs of dehydration: dry mouth, dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, muscle cramps, constipation
• Aim for 6-8 cups (1.5-2 liters) of fluids daily, adjusted for individual needs based on size, health, medications, climate and activity
• Seek medical help for persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, confusion, fainting, rapid heartbeat, or no urination for 8+ hours
