Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February every year. More than 30 million people in the United States are affected by over 7,000 rare diseases. Acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) is one of these rare diseases and carries with it a substantial disease burden. Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis frequently occur in the journey of the person living with AHP, with the average time from symptom onset to diagnosis being 15 years.
On today’s episode, nurse practitioners (NPs) Drs. Laurie Connors and Paula Tucker discuss the clinical presentation and symptoms that are associated with AHP as well as management, attack prevention and treatment strategies. NPs are important members of the collaborative care team for people living with this condition and their families.
