  • National Peace Officers' Memorial Run
    2024/09/20

    Peel Regional Police Detective Sergeant Robert "Bob" Hackenbrook and Peel Regional Police Executive Advisor to the Chief, Retired Staff Superintendent Robert "Rob" Shearer are the Co-Chairs of the 2024 National Peace Officers' Memorial Run, also known as the "Run to Remember".

    The Run is happening September 26th-28th from Toronto to Ottawa, ending at Parliament Hill at the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial at 3pm Saturday September 28th.

    Bob and Rob join 10-5 The Official Podcast of the OPP Association to discuss the 20th Anniversary of the Run. The history and significance of the Run to Remember is discussed, as well as the sponsors, route, participants, supporters and how you can get involved.

    The 2024 OPPA Uniform and Civilian Collective Agreements are discussed with OPPA President John Cerasuolo and Vice President David Sabatini in Episode 126 of 10-5 The Official Podcast of the OPP Association.

    Topics addressed include salary increases, shift premiums, timing of salary increases and retro-active payments, duration postings, the sixty day deadline for identifying previous service with a commissioned body for the purpose of vacation entitlement, and the expansion to FXT members of the OPPA's integrated Encompas Mental Health Wellness Program.

  • Indigenous Focus Crime Stoppers
    2024/08/23

    OPPA Member Sarah Bowers-Peter led the development of Indigenous Focus Crime Stoppers which won a 2023 OPP Accolade Award for Team Partnership (Community Focus). Sarah joins 10-5 The Official Podcast of the OPP Association to discuss her role as the Program Coordinator - Crime Stoppers Guelph-Wellington and the evolution of Indigenous Focus Crime Stoppers being implemented in Northern Ontario and beyond.

    The concept of the initiative was stared in mid 2023 and features Indigenous training for Crime Stoppers Call Centre staff including cultural and geographical awareness, a plan to include Indigenous training at Crime Stoppers annual conference for Coordinators & Board members, and translation of Crime Stoppers materials in all local Indigenous languages.

    All of this was accomplished by community visits to discuss how Crime Stoppers works and how it can be customized for Indigenous communities, obtaining permission from Band Councils to engage and get feedback on local issues the Band Council would like addressed, and community tours to see the needs firsthand.

    Indigenous Focus Crime Stoppers began in Big Trout Lake, with training in Thunder Bay, in conjunction with the OPP Indigenous Policing Bureau.

    The ultimate goal is to roll out the program across the province of Ontario with local Crime Stoppers programs engaging fully with the local Indigenous communities.
