Women earn less than men for the same work, on average, so they have less money to save and invest over a lifetime. Over time, this discrepancy multiplies, resulting in less lifetime earning potential. Even the most educated women in professional careers are often paid less than their male colleagues because of systemic biases, differences in negotiation, and career pauses. Because of this, women need to be aggressive about negotiating salaries, pursuing career advancement, and being compensated for what they are worth. A key factor here is the longer, unexpected lives of women than men. Now, statistically speaking, women live longer, meaning they need greater savings levels to weather retirement independently.
